New 2017 Kia Soul

2017 Kia Soul Overview

  • Three trim levels with different powertrains
  • 61.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo room
  • Available Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility
The 2017 Kia Soul is a subcompact SUV that seats 5 passengers. It competes with the MINI Countryman, Fiat 500L, and Honda HR-V. This year, it has been given a mid-cycle refresh with a revised front-end and more convenient technologies.

Three trim levels are available: the base model, + (Plus), and ! (Exclaim).

The new front-end on the Soul has more conventional styling than its predecessor. Gone are the oddly sculpted motifs at the lower fascia. Overall, the Soul has a small, boxy look with rounded corners and edges. It looks utilitarian yet cute. Standard features power side mirrors and 16-inch wheels. Available features HID headlights, LED front fog lights, heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, a panoramic moonroof, a dual-tip exhaust, and larger 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.

Under the hood, the Soul is powered by a standard 130-hp, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder direct injection engine mated to 6-speed manual (6M) or automatic transmission (6A). The Plus trim comes with a more powerful 161-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder paired to a 6-speed automatic, while the Exclamation trim is driven by a 201-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic that produces 195 pounds-feet of torque. Fuel economy ratings for the base model are an EPA-estimated 24/30 mpg city/highway (6M) and 25/30 mpg (6A). The Plus trim has a rating of 25/30 mpg. It slightly improves to a 26/31 mpg rating for the Exclaim trim.

Inside, the Soul has a standard cloth interior with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. It has a maximum cargo capacity of 61.3 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. The center stack features a standard audio system that has CD/MP3 playblack, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and a USB port. It can be upgraded to the updated UVO eServices multimedia system with a larger 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, an integrated navigation system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system. Standard features include air conditioning, power windows/locks, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Available features include leather-trim upholstery, automatic climate control, heated/ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, remote keyless entry, and push-button start.

Standard safety features include a backup camera and a tire pressure monitoring system. Forward collision warning, lane departure warning, a blindspot monitoring system, and rear cross-traffic alert are available as well.
