New 2016 Nissan Altima

2016 Nissan Altima Overview

New/Notable:
  • Gets a large update for 2016 with new styling and an updated interior
  • Fuel economy improves, estimated up to 39 mpg highway
  • Expanded safety technology, including Predictive Forward Collision Warnings
Returning for the new model year with big changes, the 2016 Nissan Altima is more polished, stylish, and efficient.

The Altima competes in a very crowded segment with the likes of the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata. As such, it requires regular changes to keep up with the rest of the pack and the new Altima has rearmed with new styling outside and better materials inside. The Altima cribs the same flowing look seen on the Maxima, just toned down for more mass market appeal. There are also new fenders and wheel designs, updated head and taillights, and new active aero shutters which make the Altima more aerodynamic at highway speeds (and more efficient).

Engine options are unchanged; under the hood there are two engine choices. The base engine is a 182-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder, while those looking for more power can opt for a larger, 270-hp, 3.5-liter V-6. Both engines are mated to a CVT and front-wheel drive. Four-cylinder models return the best fuel economy at 27/39 mpg city/highway, while V-6 models get 22/32 mpg. Sporty SR models get suspension upgrades that lowers body roll by 20-percent.

Inside, the Altima has a redone center console, more soft-touch materials in the cabin, and added technology. The same “zero-gravity” seats that Nissan says are inspired by NASA technology are back, which are softer than most seats found in the segment and pretty comfortable. Bluetooth connectivity (including audio streaming) is standard, along with a 60/40-split folding rear seat, air conditioning, and keyless entry. Also available are plenty of tech options, including satellite radio, USB/iPod port, a navigation system with a seven-inch screen, and NissanConnect, which adds a Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant for 2016. A five-inch touchscreen is included as standard on most models above the Base, with a larger seven-inch screen also available. The Altima is offered in five trim levels: Base, S, SR, SV, SL. The SR and SL trims are available with the V-6, but the other three are four-cylinder only.

Also new for 2016 is a Predictive Forward Collision Warning system, which can actually read the traffic ahead of the Altima and warn the driver of potential collisions. Standard safety features include all-disc antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, and six airbags. Also available are several safety technologies including a blind spot warning system, lane departure warnings, and rear sensors that can detect moving objects while reversing.
